Even when Signature Move (2017) is not my type of movie but what remains in me after watching the movie is beautiful. After watching Signature Move, I really respect the character Zaynab. Seeing the situation she is in and how she chooses to deal with her situation in the best way that she can, she reminds me of the character Alike from the movie we watched last week, and her reason of having her own life and living her life in her own way is what remains in me.
Signature Move (2017)
While Alma is so frustrated that Zaynab lies to Zaynab's mother about her sexuality and keeps secret, Zaynab tries hard to channel her anger into wrestling so that she can think about her situation better. Instead of choosing love over family, or choosing family over love, Zaynab chooses to come out with her mother and let her mother know that she is the one deciding her own life. Knowing that she is everything to her mother, and it is no point in hiding the fact that she is a lesbian from her mother any longer, Zaynab bravely comes out. Besides that, she also tells Alma to understand that she has her own life, her own situation to deal with, and not everyone has the same scenario. By doing so, she gains respect and understanding from both her mother and Alma. Zaynab's independent and strong characteristics impress me.
Yes. Maybe a lot of people would lie to their family about their sexuality, but It's good to see Zaynab talked to her mother in the end.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that Zaynab's character was impressive and powerful! I think the way she speaks to her mother right before going to wrestling implies that she is standing up for herself, displaying independence in thought and action, but I disagree that she bravely comes out. I think her way of talking to her mother and showing her the wrestling mask is brave in its own way, even if she never explicitly tells her mother she's gay. I think this aligns with what you said about Zaynab understanding that she is her mother's whole world, and so she makes a decision to "come out" in her own way that is still brave and allows for family and for love in her life.
